The Story of Katie Davis Majors - A 23-year-old who adopted 13 daughters
In 2008, a homecoming queen and senior class president from a suburb of Nashville, TN took a mission trip to Uganda.Little did she know that this mission trip would forever change the trajectory of so many lives.
At age 18, Katie chose to follow God’s calling on her life, no matter how radical that direction might seem to onlookers.During her senior year of high school, Katie went on a mission trip to Uganda. It was the moment where God opened her eyes to what was happening in that country, and she responded through commiting to pray for His work in that area of the world.Instead of going to college like her peers, Katie cut ties with her boyfriend and then committed to one year to teaching kindergarten in an orphanage in Uganda.She had no idea, but that one year would mould her heart for big things and a radical movement of God's working in her life.In 2008, one year out of high school, Katie made Uganda her permanent home and launched Amazima Ministries, inspired by the Ugandan word for “truth.” The organization seeks to transform lives, restore relationships and radically change communities through the truth of Jesus Christ.
But Katie didn't stop there.
She decided to adopt 13 young girls, as a single mom.
5 years later, at the young age of 23 years old, Katie became a mother to 13 girls whom she adopted and raised as her own children.See also: 5 Ways to Help Young Children Prepare for Gaining a Sibling Through Adoption In an interview with TODAY, Katie says that she learned what true love really means through taking care of her adopted children, and that it was the most valuable lesson she has ever learned in life.Her words are inspiring in her interview:“In those early days of laying sleepy heads on pillows and training tiny hearts to know Jesus, I had no comprehension of the wild, devastating, uncontainable love I would feel for them. I didn’t know that they would somehow become extensions of me, that when they hurt I would hurt more deeply than I ever had before, and that when they showed delight over a success or an excitement for God’s Word, my heart would swell within me and I would be unable to contain tears of joy. I didn’t know that sometimes I would look at them and feel so much love that my heart would physically ache within my chest.”
Then, God brought a husband into her life, to walk alongside her in ministry.
Benji and Katie grew up in the same town of Franklin, Tennessee, outside of Nashville, but only met for the first time when Benji arrived in Uganda to serve as a missionary.Talk about God's providence.“We shared a hometown with only a few hilltops to keep our adolescent lives from ever intersecting,” Katie writes on her blog.“My husband’s love is just another way God has chosen to pour His extravagant love on me, another constant reminder that He rejoices over me, and over each one of our daughters. I watch them come alive under the loving gaze of their new father, I hear the delight and the certainty in their voices as they call ‘Dad.’”See also: 8 Ways To Show Your Husband That You Love HimThe couple got married in 2015 and during that time she didn’t have her friends or sisters to be bridesmaids for her wedding in Uganda, so instead, she had her 13 beautiful daughters who continue to be living proof of God’s grace, faithfulness, and redemption.
You are a missionary
Katie explained in her interview that just because she lives in Uganda and is a full-time missions worker doesn’t mean she’s a “missionary” greater than anyone else.“I live in Uganda with my husband and my children. The people here, they are my neighbors, my friends, my family. These are the streets on which we live, the community we pray with, the friends we eat with, the people I wave to on the street. This is my home.
